就職して4年目になる友人たちと飲んでいたとき，遅刻の話になったことがある。「お前の会社ってどのくらい遅刻とかある？」という質問に対し，証券会社に勤める友人は，「ここ1年誰もしてない」と答えた。メーカーに勤める友人も深く頷いていた。少しランクの劣る会社に勤める友人が，「俺結構遅刻しちゃうなあ」と遠慮がちに発言すると，証券会社とメーカーは信じられないという体で，低ランクを責め立てた。しかし，1年間誰も遅刻しないという状況こそ異常ということはないのだろうか？

今，会社に勤める友人たちは驚くほど会社に従順だ。無遅刻無欠勤を当たり前のように続け，早出残業も笑顔でこなし，酒の席で先月の残業時間を誇る。始発で行って終電で帰れれば御の字だそうだ。なんだそりゃと思う僕の考えこそが甘いという。経営者から見れば，素晴らしい社員であろう。そして経営陣からの要求は過激さを増す。そんな気がしている。

ルールがきつくなればなるほど，人々は寛容さを失う。これは間違いないと思う。自分がルールに縛られていれば，他人もルールに縛られて欲しいと思うのが人情だ。現代人は，僕の見る限り相当ルールを守って生きていると思う。そして，寛容さを失っていっている。その様子を，大学に勤めるある友人が，「お互いに首を絞め合っている」と表現していた。言い得て妙だと思う。僕はこういう状況を「体育会系の論理」と呼んでいた。

どちらにせよ，ルールでがんじがらめになった人々が，10年後何を成し遂げるのか。日本経済は復興するのか，没落するのか。必死で働いた人々の幸せはどういう形で訪れるのか。日本は，過去，会社の奴隷となって日本経済を立て直した父親を家族が見捨てるという現象を経験している。今死ぬほど働いているのはその父親の子どもたちの世代だろう。父親のそんな姿を見てなお今のような行動をとっているのだから，同じ轍を踏むことはないのだろう。そこらへんのロジックには非常に興味がある。今の僕には，よく分からない。
